I usually cut an apple into slices and run it through the garbage disposal........to clean the blades and get any food that may be stuck and then I shoot dishwashing detergent
into the disposal area and let it set overnight and then in the morning.......I run REALLY HOT water down the drain.

Seems like a lot, but it only takes a couple of minutes
and it works.......for me anyway.

Go to your local hardware store and buy cleaning pouches specifically designed for garbage disposal applications. Essentially, all you have to do is run hot water for a few minutes, drop one of the cleaning pouches into the disposal, and turn on. When the foam sounds like it has been completely washed away, the cleaning process is complete. One of the more common names for this product is "plink". I use them monthly - and they really do keep things clean.
Hope this helps.

You can use the rind from a lemon for an inexpensive treatment or you can buy disposal cleaners which are sold next to dishwashing soap and come in liquid or in beads. Don't forget to wipe the underside of the rubber gasket because those get really dirty.
