It's illegal to get an underage child drunk. What about an adult child that suffers from a developmental disorder?

For example, what if a couple had a child that was twenty one, but only had the mentality of a two or three year old? Should it be legal for them to allow her to get drunk? She is, after all, unable to know the consequences of her actions, but is old enough legally to drink..

What do you think?

well, we have laws stupider than that for sure. legally, she's 21, and has the right to purchase alcohol. comsuming starts to skirt the moral side, not the legal. bet class wasn't boring today.

legally, yes. morally, no. well, maybe!
i was shocked a few weeks ago when a young man who was born with Down's syndrome was brought into the bar where i was DJing. He DID have 3 or four wine coolers, but was very well behaved, and seemed to get a great deal of pleasure from the music. also i felt as if the rest of the crowd was accepting of his presence.
i don't think my little tale is relevant much, but thought i'd add some thoughts. some adults i know have the mentality of a 3-5 year old when they're drinking, btw!
edit #2 after reading the details again, "drunk, mentality of a 2-3 y.o." no, no, no! that purely a case of guardian abuse!!! the young man i mentioned semed to have the mentality of an 8y.o. and i'm still ambivalant re: that case.

In my opinion, it's wrong. If the developmentally disabled individuals' parent/s (the ones allowing them to excessively consume alcohol) are their guardian, that's a form of abuse. A person's guardian is supposed to look out for the persons best interests.

An occasional drink under supervision might be considered acceptable, I guess... As long as it wouldn't be a health risk (mixing with medications, etc.)

The same goes when giving a credit card to a retarded person, they really need a guardian.

No she shouldn't be getting drunk. She doesn't know any better and there are some people who would be willing to take advantage of her.

I think that it is wrong to and is abuse due to the mentality of the individual.
