I'm not sure that census is completely accurate, but regardless, it's probably because the offical language of the US incredibly enough is English, and present illegal immigrants aside, most people in the past made the effort to assimilate.

Was ist los? I took German in High School but when will I ever use it? I can't remember much except how to count and the days of the week. We live in America and we are Americans. We aren't Germans just because we can trace an ancestry there. What were the Germans before they were Germans? Teutons. What were they before that? Celts. And before that? We all go back to Adam, but Americans speak English, and our culture is not German. We have the greatest country in the world, for now. I wouldn't want to walk around in lederhosen or wear a silly little green hat or listen to oompah music all day either. Would you? Auf Weidersein.

Because the average American doesnt need to speak German. The average person from the UK can only speak English yet the average (mainland) European will speak at least two languages, one of which is probably English.
You can live virtually anywhere in Europe with just English but you can never be fully part of the community.

I'm not sure it's accurate to say that the average white american's heritage is German. I don't have any German in me whatsoever, and I don't know that many people who do, except in certain regions. And for the record, I had three years of high school German, two years of college German, and other than 2 trips to Germany and some German language songs in choir, I've had no reason to use it. Not that I didn't enjoy learning it. Guten Tag.

Because when our ancestors came here they made sure we dropped our language in favor of english, they made sure we assimilated to our new country, and they made sure we were loyal to a country that could provide us with something Germany could not. My grandfather fought against his own cousins in WWI and my uncles fought the Germans in WWII.
Look at the loyalities the Muslims living in our country during our war in the Mid-East. Look at the Mexicans protesting in Phoenix burning USA flags and flying the mexico flag..where are their loyalties?? We came to the USA, not to make the USA assimilate to German ways, but to become AMERICANS..not GERMAN AMERICANS
