A restroom is usually in a public place, and a bathroom is in a private home.

But in Oz , if you ask where the bathroom is, you get a blank stare.... because they're known as "toilets" here .

The bathroom is where you take a bath, and the toilet is where the toilet is - and they're seldom in the same room. It's like when they've "come into" the 20th century, they just moved the outside dunny ( outhouse) into the house, and left it at that.
If you want to wash your hands after using the toilet, you have to traispe all the way through the house to use the bathroom to wash your hands. I hate having to go searching for a place to "tidy up" afterwards !

A room in a residence that contains a toilet and wash basin but no bathing facilities, such as a bathtub or shower stall. Is a half bath.
A three-quarter bath contains a shower but no bathtub.
A bathroom has a bathtub...

A restroom can be used to cover all of these.

But ladies beware....A powderoom can also be the place where they store the explosives.....

Same thing. But my first grade teacher told me , that at the school it was a restroom. She laughed, then said "We don't take a BATH at school, we do that at home".

To me it's the same. When I'm home I say bathroom, when I'm at work I say rest room.....Since there is no tub at work I guess thats what makes the difference in the name....
