Chlorophyll is the green pigment that captures photon energy from the sun and provides for its storage as an energy source for the plant.

However, there are cases where the chlorophyll is masked or the chlorophyll breaks down allowing other pigments to be prominent. Chlorophyll is masked in Japanese Maples that appear red/burgundy... Each Fall, the chlorophyll decomposes allowing the reds, golds, and yellows of the changing leaves to show through.

Leaves are green because they have chemicals. They get these chemicals from the food they make and that is what makes leaves green.
