Good question. Now here is a short and concise scientific answer. Global warming is real without any doubt. The real doubt comes in as to the cause and effect. Is it anthropogenic entirely (i.e. by our use of fossil fuels for example) or is it due to nature as you have suggested (i.e. chaotic episodes in the history of our planet which are not entirely understood, or to solar cycle activity and short-term fluctuations in solar insolation)? Or is it a result of a combination of the two?
I believe that within the next few years (less than five), atmospheric scientists will isolate the real causes. We already know the real results - melting glaciers and ice-caps, changes in existing climates, and rising sea level to mention but a few.
Meanwhile we can take steps to cut down on our dependence on fossil fuels which is reasonable regardless of the cause of global warming and begin to look for better energy sources such as nuclear energy.

Unfortunately "global warming" is real, and caused by humans, and the majority of the worlds scientists agree.
I've got to nit-pick Mad Roy's answer here:
> The world's temperature tends to vary over time. It has been
>much wamer and much colder in past ages. Right now we
>are in a warming period.
Absolutely right!
>It is controversial whether human carbon emissions have >significant impact on the process.
Sorry, wrong. Human carbon emissions have increased the global CO2 concentrations from 280 to 380 parts per million in the past 200 years. This doesn't sound like much, but it's a big increase. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, and more of it means more heating of the Earth's surface.
>It is also controversial how much we can do to slow or stop
>the warming without shutting down all kinds of energy
>production entirely.
Yeah! This depends on what action governments take in the near future. Whatever the actions, the earth will still warm in the next 20 years or so - but the degree of warming after then can vary dramatically due to actions we can start putting into place now.
> Five billion people produce a lot of carbon dioxide just by
>breathing!
Yes, there are many sources and sinks of CO2 - but we produce CO2 not just from breathing, but from industry. We generate far more CO2 from industry than breathing or from volcanic eruptions.
>And most people aren't willing to go back to the old stone
>age living conditions for some fat stupid politician who is
>exploiting public fear to advance himself and his
>"environmental" agenda.
Absolutely, we don't know what the politics of the next few decades will bring.
One more thing - it's not just temperatures that are changing - places are getting wetter or drier because the amount of rain they will receive will change too. It's not just Global Warming - it's Climate Change.

Of course global warming is real, it can be measured. But Al Gore gives us humans way too much credit. It is a natural cycle that the earth goes through. I don't remember anyone whining about global warming after the last ice age, ( there have been many of them too, btw ). The ozone layer is real and it is not under our control. We stopped using chlorflourocarbons, big deal ! Maybe the hole in the ozone layer would heal itself just as quickly if we all danced naked around a fire while singing an old Willie Nelson song. I don't think that God would actually give us enough power to destroy his entire planet. He wouldn't even let us complete a tower that would have been a few stories tall.
That's just my humble opinion.

Global warming could be very, very truly. Rent and watch "An Inconvenient Truth" narrated and produced via ex-vice chairman Al Gore someday. There had been countless articles in National Geographic, the Smithsonian, and lots of good recognize Science magazines approximately the end result our air pollution is having on this planet. It is in most cases the gases from the burning of fossil gasoline, however different matters are having results as good. The earth won't 'burn to portions', however it'll rationale dramatic local weather alterations (already is, honestly) can can spell the top of a few wild creatures, comparable to polar bears, seals, and many others. I have a difficult time believing your dad does not suppose there's air pollution. There are a few folks who say the warming of the earth is typical and has not anything to do with persons, however I am afraid nearly all of the medical group world wide disagrees together with your father.

Everyone agrees that global warming is really happening. The cause of it is debated, but most scientists believe it's caused by humans. The past cycles of warming & cooling are irrelevant. If humans are not the cause, then what is?? The casue is not the "cycles" of warmth & cold, that's not a cause. The only plausible cause for what's happening now is human activity. ( Past cycles were probably caused by out-gassing of CO2, precession of the earth's axis, etc. These aren't happening now). The only thing that's clearly happening now is CO2 levels are rising lockstep with the earth's temperature. We're causing this.

Do a search for global warming or climate change. I believe it's real. There's enough scientific evidence out there to back it up. Watch an Inconvenient Truth...
I think humans are to blame...warming trends have happened in the past, however carbon levels haven't ever been so high, and they have never increased so quickly in Earth's history.
Ultimately you'll have to decide for yourself.
