There are plenty of areas in Brooklyn and Queens that are a short ride to NYC. I personally like Forest Hills in Queens. You should speak with a realtor, go to craigslist and check out the Daily News.

Man, do NOT move to Brooklyn... It may have been a high-class place back in the 1920's, but not now!

The main city itself will be unreal - if you can afford $5k to $10k a month, you can rent an apartment in the good section of town.

Also, if you are moving to New York, make sure you are making at LEAST $1k a WEEK for your salary. Rent is NOT cheap. You may spend $2,500 for a 1/1 studio, and they will probably require 3 months down plus 1 for a security deposit - that will be $10k. It MAY be cheaper to buy a house in Nassau or Suffolk county and take the Long Island Rail Road in each day.

I have a solution for you. I have a home for sale in Suffolk County that requires you to take the rail road to work. The carrying cost is approximately $3000 a month but you would be able to rent the bottom floor for $1500 and that seems to be what people are doing these days. Try that scenario but remember that a $1000 a month in Brooklyn now is tight but with a good real estate agent you may be able to find something.
Good Luck.

I think Brooklyn will still be a little expensive. I know that apartments in Manhattan (probably Brooklyn too) are rare and you usually need to go through a broker to get them (with fees, sometimes as much as 20% of your annual rent!). Good luck with your search, but you might be happy in Queens or New Jersey and just commute to work.

Actually, I have several friends who live in Brooklyn, and they all LOVE it. It's much cheaper, and seriously they rave about Brooklyn. They don't even like to go to Manhatten anymore. Also, my old college roommate lives in Manhatten for $1000/mo. Granted, she lives with 4 other girls, but they each have their own (very small) room plus a balcony they can suntan on. I think you can find good deals in the city, but you have to either know someone (try alumni groups/organizations) and/or be willing to live with people you don't know.

A broker really might be necessary if you don't have any contacts in the city (and/or you're not willing to live with roomates you don't know). Be prepared to pay first and last months rent plus a deposit up front, in addition to any broker fees.

You should move to Ridgewood in Brooklyn, near Queens

Right at the intersection of Myrtle and Wycoff

You're right by the L Train and your commute is very short, and you're deep enough in the hood that the rent isn't as expensive.

I used to go to NYU, this was the only way I could afford it.

It's going to be tough to find a reasonably priced place in the city. Your best bet is looking in Brooklyn (although it is still pricey), Queens, Hoboken (NJ) or if you don't mind the daily LIRR commute than LI (Suffolk will be cheaper than Nassau for the most part due to its further distance from the city). Good luck with your search....

Where ever you live, try not to be locked into a long term lease. If you can rent month to month at first that would be best, until you are able to explore and decide where you would like to live. This is a personal choice and only you will be able to decide once you see the different areas.
I wish you well.

for $1,000 you might want to think about sharing rather than getting yr own place. another thing...every sunday in the ny times they have this feature called "the hunt" in the real estate section which is about some usually young, non-wealthy person and their long struggle to find a suitable place to live in ny. go to nytimes.com and at the bottom of the page click real estate. you should start reading that b/c it might give you ideas or at least prepare you for how hard it is

I grew up in Miami and married a clean Yorker too. I divorced him 9 years later. Cracker+ Yankee is taking a huge danger. If the recent Yorkers all left Florida the Cubans could nevertheless be there so i think of i could want the Yankees.
