Well, for those people who don't derive pleasure from being spanked, it presumably is a deterrent. Also, being spanked for punishment by your parents is a very different deal from being spanked for erotic pleasure by your b/f or g/f.

That said, there certainly are some kids who enjoy getting spanked, and if the parents have any intelligence they'll notice and find some other form of punishment.

Spanking is one thing. Done correctly on the buttocks. Not with a switch, strap, or other weapon of choice. Parents are afraid to correct their children in fear Social Services will take the kids. I know kids from 5-15 years of age that dare their parents to lay a finger on them. They say they will go to foster care and their parent will have to pay for them to stay there. I'm 50 now and my mother smacked our butts and we are a good generation. Todays kids are out of control because it was taken away from the parent in the home. Maybe the each State should open a few Military type boot camps and send the children there for attitude adjustments. The parents can't get help till the child robs, stabs, shoots, or kills someone. Then the parent usually gets the blame because there was no where to get help before it got to far out of control. Each state should have a place to help parents stop behaviors of children. Time out. Whoever thought of that one? Seriously!! I tried that with a grandchild and he ate the paint off my wall. Thank God it was lead free. So, next time I used a different corner for him. Well, there went the wallpaper. So, any more brillant idea's like that one? Concerned with Ohio's carelessness attitude for the children. They don't get involved till a crime has been committed. Then most likely it will need to be a felony.

Deriving pleasure from spanking is abuse!!! But yes, nothing is wrong with dishing out a little bit of discipline - the problem is when a person goes overboard and it turns into abuse. Children nowadays run amok because they have no discipline. God Bless You!!

Corporal punishment was used a lot in nthe 1950's to the early 1960's as a form of punishment by parents on the kids, and also by teachers. The crime rate during that era was considerably lower than it is now. What does that indicate to you?

My experience is that some children are defiant and the more you spank them, the tougher and meaner they get. It also turns them into bullies and little monsters.

I don't see the value in it at all. It should be used sparingly.

That said, some kinds only understand being spanked. So its a matter of parental discretion.

Best course is to try and think at your child's level and reason with them and get them to voluntarily respect and love you rather than love you and respect you through fear.

When used in conjunction with love, positive reinforcement, and other less extreme methods of discipline, spanking is very effective.

However, discipline without love is useless.

It worked on me. I went to a Catholic grade school. The nuns used to beat me just because it was time. I have never committed a crime, never been in jail, never harmed anyone. I am 62.
