The Cheshire Cat is a chracter in Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The book is amazing and insanely brilliant. Read it.

Anywho, the Cheshire Cat is cunning and clever, but he's also insane. He helps Alice some when she's in Wonderland, but he often confuses more than he helps. He has this odd grin that could just possibly be maniacal. When he appears and disappears, his grin is always the first thing to come and go. When someone asks, 'Why are you grinning like a Cheshire Cat?' it's probably because you have that slightly maniacal, evil look that makes people think that you know something they don't.

"You may have noticed....that I'm not all there....myself."

“All right,” said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.

“Well! I’ve often seen a cat without a grin,” thought Alice; “but a grin without a cat! It’s the most curious thing I ever saw in all my life!"

-- Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll

This delightful little cat torments poor Alice as she struggles to find here way through wonderland. It spouts philosophy as well as nonsense.

At the end when he reappears at the Queen's croquet field she orders that he be beheaded. He slowly makes his body disappear, just leaving the head. Prompting the question: "Can you beheaded something that has no body?"

Those with a Cheshire Cat grin are thought to be "up to something."

The Cheshire Cat is the best character in Alice in Wonderland. He appears and disappears at will. He's clever, funny, and slightly insane. He helps Alice, but more for his own amusement than of altruistic intentions. He both is and isn't, kind of like in the Schrodinger's cat dilemma. If you can't see him, does that necessarily mean he isn't there? You should definitely read the book, it's not just a fairy tale.
