The previous answers suggesting Java are valid. But if you REALLY want to learn about programming, get this book:

The Art of Computer Programming by Donald E Knuth. Vol 1.

You can get it real cheap (like 1 dollar) at used bookstores.

First learn the basics of computer programming, what it is, who does it e.t.c. You can find this in a book or on the internet. Then you should research different languages and select one that interests you. Since you are new I suggesst you start with java, I started with C++ though. You should start learning java again from a book or online tutorials. After you learn java, meaning that you can easily write a program with looking at the book barely, then move on to another language. To be a full fledged programmer, you should know a couple of programing languages at least five.
