OK the other answers are correct but incomplete. A control is something that is not subject to whatever your testing. If your testing eg. how well different fertilizers work you would have a couple plants with different types of fertilizer and one with no fertilizer. The one without is the control.

In a scientific experiment, you will have a control group and an experimental group. Both groups will be the same, with the exception of what you are testing. The testing will be done ont he experimental group and the control group will be left the same.

For example, a drug company is testing the effectiveness of a new drug. They will have two groups. Both groups meet the same criteria. The experimental group will be given the real drug. The control group will be given a placebo.

It is the one constant in the expieriment that the expierimentor uses as a factor to measure the results of the expieriment. It is to make the entire thing more predictable and "controlled" and give a common denominator that can be compared to see the effects of the variables in the expieriment.
