I've heard Dorchester is poor and dangerous, but I've also seen that it is very affordable. My husband and I are considering buying a condo there, but would like to hear from a few that live there. We have been in Boston for about 4 yrs and are familiar with many other areas (Somerville, Cambridge, Boston, etc.), but don't know much about Dorchester.

It´s crime infested and that´s the only reason housing there is cheaper. Your car insurance will go way up.

I've lived in Dorchester for 30 years, the majority of what you hear and what some people in this forum state- is a bunch of nonsense-

That's actually a good thing because it keeps them in the subburbs living in la-la land- the biggest haters of Dorchester are the whites who ran out of here in the 1970's/80's.

Dorchester is the largest part of the city, and can be divided into 3 distinct sections- get a condo near the Quincy/ South boston, south shore area- perfectly safe, affordable with easy access into the city- to the airport, the major interstates etc.

I work in Dorchester & have several friends who live here. It's not as bad as its reputation suggests & has been steadily improving over the years. No offense to any readers, but there is a saying that once the gay community moves in, the community tends to gentrify. This started happening a few years ago & the area has greatly improved. It is a very multi-cultural place that has an interesting heritage. There are cultural pockets where you can find some of the best Polish & Jewish delis, Vietnamese cuisine & Irish pubs. Alot of the inhabitants of this area & their families have been here for a LONG time & they can tell you all kinds of stories. Just like living anywhere in a city, you always need to be on your guard, but I think you'll find that Dorchester isn't as intimidating & nasty as some think & is actually a pretty fun place to live & have a family.

Dorchester is Boston's largest district. Many parts of it are now Boston's hottest up-and-coming, multi cultural, diversified, gentrifying fast neighborhoods - there was a long article about this in the "Globe" just a few days ago - while other Dorchester neighborhoods are currently suffering from a resurgence of crime and street shootings (including of innocents).

Dorchester is a very big part of greater Boston.... your question would need to be more specific. There are a number of different neighborhoods in Dorchester, some safer then others.
