About an inch in diameter? A bit big for a dowel I think. Do you have any of the same flooring? If you do use a hole saw to cut a 1 inch plug out of the same material, and glue it in place. It will have a smaller hole in the center you can fill with a matching wax stick. If you don't have any of the same material, you can take the patch from the back of a closest or some unnoticeable area.

Most wood working shops sell bungs out of a variety of hard woods they are precut wood plugs. I have even seen them at Lowes, your hole may be too big though.

find a piece of dowelling about the same diameter. That is made out of fir.....sand it to fit with a slight taper outward at the top(so it is a bit bigger)slip in hole and when got it so that it slides in leaving about the last 1/8 glue the sides and drive it home. Wipe off excess glue on top and wait for it to dry (a day ir two)and varnish over a couple times.

I'd find a stick (or get a dowel) the right size and whittle it or sand it to the right size, but still fits tightly into the hole. Saw off enough to fill the hole and have just a little bit sticking out. Then sand it to the level of your floor...

For a unique fix glue a quarter in the hole, and sit back and watch how many people bend over to pick it up. Cheap fun
