When Lincoln took the oath of office on March 4, 1861, he was confronted with a hostile Confederacy determined to expand and threatening the remaining federal forts in the South, the most important of which was Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, S.C. Anxious not to offend the upper South, which had not yet seceded, Lincoln at first refused to take decisive action. After the failure of an expedition to Fort Pickens, Fla., however, he decided to relieve Fort Sumter and informed the governor of South Carolina of his intention to send food to the beleaguered garrison. The Confederates, unwilling to permit continued federal occupation of their soil, opened fire to reduce the fort, thus starting the Civil War. When Lincoln countered with a call for 75,000 volunteer

When Lincoln became President , he was confronted with a hostile Confederacy who were determined to expand and threatened federal forts located in the South. Lincoln desired to appease the South by not taking action. After a failed mission to Fort Pickens , Florida, Lincoln decided to help Fort Sumter and informed the governor of his intentions to send food to the garrison there. But on April 12,1861 the Condederates opened fire on Fort Sumter to extinguish federal occupation there , starting the Civil War. Lincoln called for 75000 volunteers and there was no turning back.

Well you have more than one paragraph there.

Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States on March 4, 1861. Lincoln was anxious not to offend the upper South, which had not yet seceded but he was immediately confronted with a hostile Confederacy. The Southern separatists were determined to expand and threatening the remaining Federal forts in the South.

The most important Southern outpost was Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina (always spell out the names). Lincoln at first refused to take decisive action. It was only after the failure of an expedition to Fort Pickens, Florida (you do not explain what the expedition was supposed to be doing and how it failed) , that he decided to relieve Fort Sumter. Lincoln informed the governor of South Carolina of his intention to send food to the beleaguered garrison. The Confederates were unwilling to permit continued federal occupation of their soil and opened fire to reduce the fort (reduce the fort to what? rubble?); this action started the Civil War. Lincoln then countered with a call for 75,000 volunteers (to do what? to invade the South????)

Well, the whole thing isn't here, but I can help you strategize.

If it's a passage of just this paragraph, it'll be slightly harder, but the same basic rules apply. But if it's a few paragraphs, what you should do is break it up into syntacical moves, that is, mark in the margins what happens in paragraph one, two, etc.

Then write a single sentence that describes the main idea of each section.

Then string each sentence together using transitional language and voila! you'll have a summary.
