The sentiment is akin to "in the land of the half-wits, the intelligent man would be stoned (as with rocks...)". People usually don't react positively towards things they don't understand and mob rule can be a very powerful thing.

Meritocracy is the easy, fast way...it comes in numbers. Excellence is rare and will always be out numbered by meritocracy. Look at the world we live in.... perfect example.

I have and when I read questions like "what is your fave punctuation mark" and see that 37 people responded to it... I know this statement to be true.
