Now I beleive that fighting is wrong period... The commisioner of hockey made it quite clear that fighting , which includes eye gauging, sticks to the face a black eye, missing teeth and many bloody noses, is part of the game. And people are more or less cool with this. But when we talk about players fighting in basketball its almost like they should be banned for life becuase they have no behavior. Even baseball and football we look past the eye gauging and the brawls on the mound. But if you fight in basketball you are considered some sort of a street hoodlum who probably listens to too much rap.... why?

In hockey there are giant walls of glass protecting the fans. In the NBA, there is nothing.

I believe this is mostly the case of how physical the other sports are. In hockey, fighting is a way to protect the "skill" positions from taking an unfair amount of the physical damage. Usually ends up goon-type on goon-type, so no harm no foul. In baseball, the majority of confrontations involve batters charging the mound, which is perhaps more prevalent in the American League where these pitchers don't bat. Football is violent, who knows what goes on under those piles. Basketball is different. If fighting was allowed Kobe would be on IR after the retaliation for the recent elbows he has thrown, who wants that after this 6 game stretch of his? With only 5 players on the court at a time, no padding/ armor to speak of, and usually just one or two really good players per team, fighting could kill a clubs season. These peeps make too much money to fight. Also, the fact that the NBA is seen as a "black" sport makes many see any act as "street" or "hoodlum." Fact is, no fighting in NBA is 2 parts finance and 1 part racism.

I wonder how many of you people that have answered up to this point. Basketball is one of the most physical sports a person can play. Thats why fouls are called because people get hit bumped and pushed around from Parks & Recreation (arent the little guys the most physical of all), to the NBA. thats why the terms like "charging" &"hacking" exsist in Basketball. Elbow are thrown & fly, shoulders are used too, and have you ever ran into a 6' 5 230lb or bigger person standing firm to the ground pretending to be a picket fence. that **** feels like running into a brick wall when you are 5'10 170lbs. That is also a part of basketball, but the part that brings penalties and fines if done to an excess. basketball is simply a black male dominated sport and since that day came more fines have been handed down like crazy. but in the 50's - 80's the overly physicall guy was a valuable commodity, As guys like Xavier McDaniel, Michael Cage, Marquis Johnson, John Havlichek aka "Hondo", **** in hondo's day they even let the blood continue to run down a players face if he was able to play. Check out some old NBA golden age footage. I think the league has just managed to find a way to recoup some of the money they are playing to athletes.

It's all based on what sport it is. Hockey was designed to be a rough, physical game to appeal to certain people. The players are tough and wear pads, and it is in the rules for them to hit if done in the propper fassion. There have been recent incidents with hits that have gotten coverage due to their dangerous nature. Fighting has pretty much been part of the game forever, and its a fan favorite. The league won't fine for anything like minor fighting beause it brings people to the games.Football is pretty much 100% contact, so nothing to bad when anyone hits anyone, in fact it's encouraged. This can lead to some fights, but people understand due to the game and only look at them slightly less. In basketball, the rules are strongly against contact. Fighting is frowned upon because the way the sport is designed. It isn't part of the game, so the leagues don't like it at all and punish players for these fights.

That's like asking why is kicking the ball allowed in soccer and not tennis. Just two different sports, two different images. Sometimes the best part of hockey is the fight. Remember the first hockey games on Nintendo where the gloves came off and you actually had to fight in the video game?

Basketball is considered a "non-contact" sport and that's why fighting is not allowed. In Hockey contact is expected a lot more often therefore is more tolerated. They also have a lot of padding and protective gear.

Unlike football and hockey basketball is a very limited contact sport and its a game about control. If you can't control yourself than its true you shouldn't be playing.

No padding and the players are too overpaid for the coaches to allow the beatings.
