Yes horses can get colds. The best way to treat them is to let their own body create the antibody that it needs. Make sure that they have good clean hay (some times a runny nose and a cough can come from dusty hay) and lots of good water and let them be. Giving them drugs when they don't really need it will just weaken their emune system

You should always call your vet when you know something is wrong. Your horse isn't eating- if this goes on for very long he will be in very serious danger. NEVER give a horse medication until it has been evaluated by a vet. If you don't know what you're treating you stand a strong chance of making it worse, limiting the meds the vet can give after your dosing or masking important symptoms for diagnosis. Since your horse is older, you should be on top of any little change in his behavior/ temperament and really diligent about keeping him healthy as older horses tend to deteriorate a lot quicker with less serious problems. Strangles is extremely contagious and sometimes deadly. You should not only be concerned for your horse but all of the horses which are in the vicinity. Could be a lot of things. Horses can contract lots of respiratory colds, viruses and infections that cause discharge. Could be something simple, like a cold or heaves or it could be worse. Get the vet out as soon as possible to have them diagnose the problem.

Yes. Horses get colds. It is usually a result of the EHV4 that you are suppose to give the horse yearly. In many instances, when a horse catches a cold, the vet will prescribe an antibiotic. You should contact your vet to see what he/she feels needs to be done.

Antibiotics should only be used if the cold or infection has been caused by a bacteria. Antibiotics have no effect with viruses or fungal infections.
Horses with colds are best given supportive therapy and non steriodal anti inflammatory drugs (aspirin) to prevent secondary infection like pneumonia. It always depends on the symptoms and nature of the sickness or infection.

At 19 years old, I would definitely get the vet out. Strangles doesn't usually occur in a horse that old. Have you checked his temperature? If elevated, get the vet out ASAP. DO NOT fool around with other horse's medication. Until you know what it is, you may do more harm than good. Edit: I don't mean to imply that strangles CAN'T happen in an older horse; it is not typical. It is usually younger horses that get it.
