Disagree. I've been in schools where kids steal the books off of each other, don't study together, and generally don't trust each other.
I think competition is good, but a competitive atmosphere is lethal. It explains America's high crime rate, high divorce rate, stress related illnesses, debt, and a few other things. You can't compete with everyone, or you won't have any friends. You gotta relax and trust people around you.
Also, having taught and worked with people, in games, someone who routinely loses is going to seclude himself from society. He may bully the smarty guys, or just not fit in. It's not a good thing.
People should aim to do their best, without worrying about doing better than their peers. Perhaps if the whole class were competitive as a team, against other schools, or against the clock... and on occasion it can be fun. But most of the time, people shouldn't worry about the other guy.

I agree. It gives me more motivation to work harder when I know I'm competing against other students. I don't get jealous or anything of other's accomplishments, but I also like others to be aware of my accomplishments. And another thing you have to look @ is competition for jobs. Think about it...If you and another graduate had the same degree, pretty much the same level of experience, but one had a 3.84 gpa and another had a 3.02 gpa, which do you think would probably stand out to the employer? This is something that motivates a lot of students to work hard and leave the competition in the dust.

This is one respect that classroom reflects the "real-world".
Competiveness, - between you and yourself, - or you and your job, or you and your co-workers.
