x = sds
y = ads

x + y = 442
3x + 4y = 1540

-3x - 3y = -1326
3x + 4y = 1540
y = 214

x + 214 = 442

x = 228

so, 228 sds, and 214 ads

you need 2 equations since you have 2 unknowns.
the first is for the # of tickets sold: (s = students, a = adults)
s+a=442
the second one is for $$ of tickets sold
3s+4a=1540.
solve the first one for either a or s, and plug that in for a or s in the second equation and solve!
