Princip was a Serbian who opposed the Austro-Hungarian Empire (which was very large and contained many vastly different ethnic groups). He shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand as a way of gaining attention for the cause of Serbian nationalism. Because of the vast alliances in Europe at the time, the result was World War I. What's ironic is that Ferdinand actually supported Serbia already...
