Two children, a brother and sister, find themselves lost in the Australian outback (the reason for this is different in the book than in the movie.) They have no real skills for survival, but meet a young aborigine, who is on a "walkabout" (a rite of passage requiring him to survive on his own for six months as an initiation into manhood). What happens between the threesome is quite different in the book than in the movie. But both explore the clash of cultures between the white children and the aborigine youth.
