Its all about what you download and the terms associated with it. You need to read the programme vendor's EULA, that is End User License Agreement which contains the terms you are agreeing to in accepting their offer. All Legitimate companies who sell software products insist that you accept their EULA where you will legally agree to say, not copy the programme and use it for personal use on 1 system only. These are bog standard business terms and conditions. The problem is where Dodgy companies offer so called free programmes whose EULA's contain very dubious things indeed. In accepting their "free" offer you could be agreeing to absolutely anything including allowing them to have free and unrestricted access to all and any information on your system. They get away with this because they know for a fact that 1 in 50,000 people actually read the EULA. Some decent companies involved in the advertising trade ask nothing other than you join in a survey or accept harmless if annoying pop-ups. The dangerous ones of which there are many might install Malware or Scumware on your system. There are people / companies who simply offer restricted versions of their programmes free in the hope that it will encourage you to buy the full model. Be very cautious from where you download, read the EULA, have decent Anti Virus, Firewall and Anti Spyware protection.( Do be careful here many progs which claim to be Anti Spyware are in fact Spyware themselves).McAfee's www.mcafee.com Site Adviser is great for keeping you away from bogey sites and its free. For guidance and excellent totally free advice join CastleCops www.castlecops.com where the membership of millions are very experienced and always willing to help. Visit SpyWare Warrior. www.spywarewarrior.com which has a database of known bad ASW progs. Download only from sites like FileHippo.
You mentioned CC or Crap Cleaner as its known. This is an excellent little prog which I and millions of others have been using for years without problems. Before you download free programmes go to CastleCops and ask the members what experiences they have had with the product, its vendor and the site providing it. You might be surprised at the responce. Hope this helps.

Check the site that you are downloading from, i.e. Download.com, Snapfiles, Google, Yahoo, PCWorld, etc. these sites are trustworthy and safe, also usually the home site of the owner or maker of the software is usually trustworthy. Always remember the safe saying : if in doubt, don't do it.. Good Luck
