Usually, I'm annoyed at whoever holds the song rights. The band usually doesn't have those rights and often never had them.
So, yes, I'm pissed that songs I like are being used (misused) in commercials, but I don't think most bands have anything to do with how the songs are used.
Some favorites (sarcastic) for misused songs are Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life," a heroin song used for a cruise line, The Specials' "Rudy"--specifically the line "Stop Your Messing Around"--used in a diaper commercial, and the cover of the La's "There She Goes" by Sixpence None the Richer in a birth control ad. Not only is the Sixpence version horrible compared to the original, but the song is about using heroin. I guess they figure that most women on birth control won't know the La's (mid-1980s) or the song's meaning, but it's still absurd.

It doesn't annoy me and I think that it doesn't show that they "sold out". Just like the KFC commercials with "Sweet Home Alabama" playing in the background, or the Beer commercials with "Simple Man" as the theme song. I think its cool and it makes me pay attention to the product.

They sold out when they made their first records as all non-classical non-jazz people do.
