these icons are programs that run at startup. goto startup and select run. type in msconfig. hit enter, now choose the startup tab. here is where you take the check out of the boxes for the programs you don't want to run at startup. choose only the ones that you know are not system programs.

Two ways, you can 'right click' on the Icon and select 'exit' or 'close', do this only if you don't need the program to run. The other is to open the program and in the 'settings' tab, there should be an option to display an Icon in the task tray or not. Not all programs will give this option. Just make sure that you don't need the program that's displaying the Icon, such as your sound or video driver.

the 2 above answers are both good, the first one is what you need to do if you want to remove icons and free up resources which will help you if your system is lagging and running a little slow, many people complain about slow and freezing up systems when most of their problems are self inflicted by having loads of programs running in the background that they are not using, they are just wasting resources.the second answer is fine if you just want to remove/hide the icons and system resources and performance are not an issue.

are you talking about the ones next to the clock? right click there, choose "properties" and then the "customize" button. to remove whatever icons you don't want, just choose "hide when inactive".
