The teenage girls that come into the office for pregnany tests have the same responce to positive tests based on race. Usually it is the middle class white female that will cry, and say ,"my parents will kill me, I can never tell them." Female teen minorities usually look a little scared, but say ,"they are not afraid to tell their parents," and usually keep their babies. Why do you think this is? Also, it is not socioeconomical because their parents make about the same amount of money, and live in the same communities, which is middle to upper middle class.

I am saying we end up giving referrals to Dr.'s who do abortions to more white girls then black and mexican girls.

Yes, I'm Hispanic and grew up in a Hispanic community. Most girls will get pregnant when they were in high school but they will have it and their parents supported them. Almost none of them got abortions or even less gave their babies for adoption, they raised them. I think it has something to do with religion and culture. Most Hispanics like me are Catholic so we are taught from the priests and nuns that abortion is murder. Culturally, Hispanics tend to look down at women who had abortions or gave their babies for adoption. Most of them see it as an offense and being irresponsible. White, upper middle class have high hopes for their daughters and sometimes choose an abortion. If they're pro-life they decide to give the baby for adoption and keep it a secret. In Andrew Hacker's book "Two nations: one black and white" it spoke of teen pregnancy among teenagers of different races. It showed statistically, that while most Hispanic and black girls got pregnant at an early age it was the white teenage girls that will have the most abortions. Though, I'm Pro-choice I know the reasons why many Hispanic girls don't abort or use adoption: the people around you and your religious beliefs. That is the cause of this and it explains why minorities are more apt to not having abortions.

Middle class white families tend to worry about their image. "MY daughter wouldn't do THAT' type of attitude. So even though their little girl IS getting herself into trouble, the parents have created a wall to discussing things like sex, pregnancy, drug experimentation, and all the other things teenagers do and go through.
I can't really speak for black families. But from what I've seen, they are more accepting and open about the real world. They probably know their daughter is having sex. Not to say they condone it, but there seems to be a sense of honesty there about things that would be considered taboo in white families.

In general, I believe it is a terrible idea to formulate stereotypes based on anecdotal evidence. And even if you have been a nurse for 30 years, you still have a limited population pool.
The reasons will vary based on religious beliefs and cultural and geographical norms.
I can tell you that my parents wouldn't have been pleased, I would have said that they were going to kill me, and then they would have stepped up to the plate and supported me and the baby. You said what the minority families did, but not the white families. Did your value judgment end with the girls saying, "my parents will kill me?" Because children who grow up believing their parents will not support them possibly make better decisions. I did.
I also tell my child that if he gets arrested I will not bail him out of jail. Irrelevant whether true or not, but highly valuable, if he believes me, and chooses to not get arrested.

My experience with nurses leads me to answer your question.
The great society welfare program of LBJ destroyed the black family in America. By supplying welfare to unwed and single parent house holds, it took away the responsibility for the father.
In order to retain the checks coming, in the father had to be absent and out of the house when checked upon by the welfare worker.
Single parenthood became the goal not marriage.

Looking at the statistics, more black girls have abortions than white girls. maybe it has to do with where you live. I also believe the culture of black families is to take care of your own...that is thier grandbabies, and their grandmothers. Extended family...'it takes a village'.

same reason we have so many eating disorders in America.. we have a false perception of what the "Ideal" life is.. of what everyone "should be" and anything to the contrary to that is deemed too stressful to handle..
