I love my job and am not planning on quitting anytime soon. I make amazing tips and great pay. It's really getting on my nerves how some customers always ask, Is this what you plan on doing forever? Or do you go to school? I love my job, but I'm starting to detest the customers who tell me how to live my life. Are they right? What should I do?

Don't let customers tell you what to do. They think whatever they want, and put their judgment in where they shouldn't. They are not right. Only you can decide what to do for yourself, if you love your job, keep it, if you want to go to school, then do that.

Tell them you love this job, and that it is none of their business. I too work as a server, a friend of mine at work got a lot of negative comments when she was pregnant and working there. A customer actually said, "my daughter is pregnant too, but of course she's older than you are" in which my friend said how old, and I'm unsure of the woman's answer, but my friend was older by at least 2 years. Don't let customers get you down- people are rude, judgmental, and put their two sense in when it's not needed or asked for.

Working as a waitress is not something that most people aspire to do. You have to work nights, weekends, and holidays, spend long hours on your feet, get belittled by customers, etc. Most people see a young person in your position and assume that it is something which is being done temporarily because of these issues.

Also, you might be happy with your job now but what about five or ten years from now? Will you still be happy with your job or will you feel that you should have done something else with your life?

i fell into the same category. I worked in a used bookstore for years and people wondered why i wasn't willing to do anything more with my life. I loved what I did and I was a single guy making more than enough money to purchase anything that I wanted at the time. My advice to you is to tell those customers exactly what you've told us. Tell them that you love what you're doing and you make amazing tips and great pay and currently a further education isn't in your future plans. Thats all you need to tell them and that should be the end of it.

You have to do what you feel is best for you. If you love your job and are really happy with it, than keep it. Dont let the customers stomp too hard on your nerves. I've worked in Management/Retail for awhile now and some of my customers are the same way. It can be annoying but I just remain friendly. So just stay nice with them as long as you can and if they get too snoody about it just simply tell them that it's your life, you're happy with your job, and you do just fine financially, and they shouldnt try so hard to pry themselves in a strangers life when it hasnt been requested.

Do what you want. It's your life. The world needs good waiters and waitresses. You don't have to be dumb to be a waiter or waitress. Ignore these comments from ignorant customers or take them as a compliment . They obviously think you are smart or they wouldn't suggest you should go to school.

well if thats what you love you should tell the customers that.
If you're thinking on the side you want to go to college/school, i would advise it, at least after you graduate, you have alot more options if in the case you find yourself not liking the type of job a couple years later.

If you love your job, then it's all worth it. If only we could all be lucky to find a job like that. It's not any of those people's businesses what you plan to do with your life.

I feel that everyone looks for a job they love. Cause if you love what you do you will not get borded with it like some do with jobs they hate. I would kindly tell them this is what I like to do and thanks for their concern but it just isnt up to them what you want to do.

Thank them for their suggestion, say you are working toward tuition and could afford it if the tips were better. See how much they give.
