The need to express their ideas and feelings rather than keeping them pent up. The end result - releasing negative thoughts, obtaining sympathy, stroking one's ego - are a few examples of why people read poetry.

There are too many factors to list. It could be interest in a topic or the poet, interest in the first couple of lines, or just a love of poetry.

people read poetry because poetry can become anything you want it to be. The same words on paper can mean somethign different to every person. Every poem can have a different impact on a personal life depending on their life experiences. They are appealing to people because they can mean whatever you want them to and becuase they are so open to inturpretation.
