As citizens, we have the right to vote and the right to voice our opinions freely. Many people will argue that these rights give us the opportunity to affect the policies in the government.
I have to admit, that just these two rights do give us opportunities that are not available in more restrictive countries like China, but to what extent do we really have any influence on the policies or activities that take place in our government?
Over the last 6 years, the policies in this country have resulted in less freedom and less democracy than we have had in the past. Oh, yeah, we're at war, but that does not mean that it is OK to put people on trial without presenting them with the evidence, or hold people in prisons without giving them any justification. Are people upset about these policies? Of course they are! The right to Habeas Corpus and the right to a speedy trial are part of the first 10 amendments to the constitution. Have people complained about these policies? Yes. Even congressmen have complained, but to no avail.
And what about the victims of the Katrina disaster in New Orleans? Have they asked for help from the Federal and Local governments? Yes. Have they gotten help? Not nearly enough.
I don't feel that my voice is heard in this county, and I think it is the result of 2 things:
- The two party system doesn't give us a true choice of candidates when we are voting.
- The huge amount of money needed to run a political campaign requires people in the congress to "buddy up" with corporate sponsors or special interest groups who "recommend" specific policy decisions.
The only way that the average American can influence the government is to make a bunch of money and use that money to influence policy decisions through campaign contributions. I am very loyal to the founding father's intent in creating this country and in the principles expressed in the constitution, but, in the current climate, I feel completely unable to affect change in my government. My vote seems useless, though I still vote religiously. This was not the ideal that the founding fathers envisioned for this nation.

Not at the time most decisions are made. We have elected officials with whom we put trust to make those decisions. We DO have the say when we vote. If you don't like what decisions are being made, vote them out of office. If an elected official knew the wrong decision would cost them their job, they may make better decisions. People need to pay attention and then do something about it - like the last big election. It woke up some Republicans. However, if not followed thru in future elections the elected officials will write it off as a fluke and continue their past ways.

Bush may have a "Mendoza Line" approval rating now, but there were plenty of people who voted him into office in 2000 and 2004.
Addressing the rest of your statement, The people really do not have any actual "say" in what happens in our country; except to vote for our representatives, who's duty it is to properly represent the majority of their constituents.
However, if the representatives have a special agenda, they may violate such duty. After all, they are only human...

wait, dont forget- they want to privatize the internet for national security.. Check out Ron Paul.. He has my vote in 08.. He votes on issues strictly based on the constitution. He does NOT vote in favor of congressional pay hikes. He gives back a portion of the money he earns yearly to the justice department.. This guy is not selfish and doesn't have alterior motives.. He is a republican, but lets face it.. If there is a decent guy/girl running for president who believes in the importance of our constitution, i dont care dem or repub..
