Yes, girls get into it all the time. In fact, my wife plays, and she's a darned good player. The group that I play with is about 40% female, give or take.
The big draw to the game is that it's not *too* hard to learn the basics, there's a lot to do, and it's rather pretty. The earlier stuff in the game is generally easier to do, while the stuff later on ramps up in difficulty, to keep it challenging. If you find you don't like doing something, then don't - there's no requirement to go into dungeons, do PvP, craft stuff, etc.
That said, if he's a hardcore gamer - for your own sanity, set ground rules on how much time he'll be online. Otherwise, as you said, it'll consume his time.

There are many reasons the game is popular. The questing is fun, crafting is easy, there are lots of places to explore and baddies to kill. Blizzard just knows how to make a fun game. They also put out Diablo and Starcraft, just so you have an idea.
People who aren't typically "gamers" do play WoW and enjoy it. It's really easy to learn how to get around, so that's part of the appeal. My boyfriend wasn't really into anything but console games until I introduced him to WoW, and now he plays it all the time.
You may want to keep an eye on your husband's - and yours as well if you do get your own account - playtimes if he's the type to get sucked into a game so easily. Make sure you guys get out of the house every now and again, and don't shirk your real world responsibilities. As with all things, moderation is key.

I've seen many peoples lives become consumed on those mmorpg's such as world of warcraft, and everquest. I would not recommend getting involved with these games. Tell your husband to stick to the 360, his free time will thank him. Although if you are ok with all of the time he will be spending on that game, than he's a lucky guy because most women would not be. If you are not allready seeing what I'm talking about then you will...
Sorry but it is true... I had a friend lose his marriage over everquest on ps2.

WoW has a huge, emmersive environment, you get caught up in it because you interact with so many other people. The only way to truly become powerful in that game is to join a guild and go on regular dungeon-runs, which causes you to interact with the same people over and over and form very real friendships.
It's not so much the game of WoW that addicts people as it is the social environment created by the game.

A lot of people feel these games create a sense of power and control for the player. Does this make sense to you knowing your husband as you do?

i never played it but my friends do. they are hooked on that game. i guess its a virtual universe where you can live out another life. on a side note, dont get the 360. that thing is junk. i sold mine 4 months after i got it, because i had to send it in twice, what is that about.
