Hi, I had a sweep after 7 days overdue, I did not bleed and it did not start labour I had to be induced on day 12 which was not the ideal but not aweful either, they give you a prostaglandin pessary which helps soften and open the cervix, then 12 hours later had anther as nothing had happened, then after 2 hours I went into full labour, and it only lasted 2 hours !!
Good luck

2nd baby-- had 1st sweep (they called it "stripping the cervix") done by an OB/GYN, very painful, bled a fair bit, lots of contractions but no labor. Had it done again by a CNM the following week; it was painless, still bled a little, and had my baby that evening.

4th baby-- had the sweep done at a morning appt. on my due date, baby born just before midnight that night. Bled on and off through the day-- mucous plug, bloody show and all that.

5th baby-- almost same scenario as the 4th, although baby didn't arrive until the early morning hours, next day.

6th baby-- had sweep done at appt. on Wed., bled a little of course, had lots of contractions but no labor. Woke up Friday morning with amniotic fluid leaking, and had to be induced/augmented due to inefficient contractions.

All of my births *except* for the last one were done with no drugs-- either pain meds or other labor meds like Pitocin. The last one I had to have Pitocin, although I did end up making it through without pain drugs, I *wish* I'd had an epidural!!! Pitocin is the Devil! No joke! Definitely something to avoid, if at all possible, when you are laboring.

As you can tell, though, this procedure was generally very effective for me, and I was always told that a certain amount of bleeding (spotting or bloody mucous) was to be expected. The procedure separates the amniotic sac from the mouth of the cervix, so it breaks a bunch of blood vessels that normally wouldn't break until labor was established on its own. Even with my last birth, when I didn't immediately go into labor as I did with the others, the midwife attributed my ruptured membranes to the sweep, because it probably weakened the amniotic sac enough to allow the rupture.

I hope this information is helpful!

i was given a sweep although dint know i was having 1. i went into hosp due to swollen ankles i was 40 +3 and due to go to the hosp n e way a week later. any way all my obs were checked and i was fine, i was having irregular contractions so the doc gave me an internal said i was 3cm dilated and his head was still quite high was told to go home until i got more regulare contraction got home and started to thinka bout what had happend (got home at 4pm ish) realized she gave me a sweep. any way me and my dh watched some peter kay and had a take out n went to bed about midnight, woke up 2 hours later in pain and was taken back to hospital where was 4cm so went into delivery suite. 12 hours later gave birth to my son kit weighin in at 10lb 12oz. but in my experience i believe a sweep helps a great deal in moving things along xx gud luck

i bled after having a sweep and still had to be induced. i was induced at 41weeks and 5 days and ended up hemorraging because of all of the drugs they had me on to cause the contractions. (two weeks ago).

I wasn't overdue but after having my membranes stripped I did bleed a little. I was in beginning stages of labor within just a few hours and had my little girl less than 24 hours later.

I did once a week for 3 weeks. Did nothing for me. Found out my daughter over due too. So I was ready when I was ready... I do advise raspberry tea though to speed up labour!! :)
For those that are curious how up to date this advice it. I had my second baby, Kira March 2nd 2007.

I didn't bleed and it didn't bring on labour...unless you count starting 7 days later naturally as helping to start it? A very uncomfortable procedure (but compared to childbirth!! lol) Good Luck.

So far I have had two sweeps but no labor. I have lost my plug to but nothing seems to be working. So it is different for everyone. Good Luck!
