I have helped friends having trouble with their PC's. The first thing I do is remove Norton, and it often solves the problem.

I think zonealarm firewall, and AVG anti-virus, are better, and free.

NORTON!!!!! Oh C**P!!! it slows down your system by about 20%, and impossible 2 completely uninstall without formatting and reinstalling everything again, plus it is lousy for findin viruses, Id advise using Pc-Cillin 2007, gets more updates in a day than Norton does in a week, now has spyware scanner, has the best firewall out there, and 1 licence works on 3 machines.... and is Vista compatible as well

I hate 2 say this but u r probably infected with at least 1 virus by now using norton.

always have stuff like Ad-Aware and Spybot on your system as spyware scanners as well, Pc-Cillin's isnt as good as those yet for spyware scanning..

As others have said, Norton is known to cause a few wee problems on your computer...... and I've certainly noticed it's gotten a fair few mentions as causes of problems in the Q&A problem pages in various computer magazines over the last several years.
As a paid for option, ZONEALARM INTERNET SECURITY SUITE is better (came tops in a test in WHICH? Magazine last month), and can be downloaded from http://www.zonelabs.com

While for free you can use a combo of.........

AVIRA Anti-VIR PersonalEdition Classic
http://www.free-av.com

SPYBOT: Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org

ZONEALARM Firewall (Free Edition)
http://www.zonelabs.com
(regarded as way stronger than Windows Firewall).

These are the 3 I currently use on my PC (3.33GHz Intel Celeron D, 1GB Ram, Windows XP Home), and it absolutely flies.

lol..think you got the general idea by now mate.

get rid of norton it fills your registry up with so much rubbish and can really slow your pc at best.
at worst i have struggled to sort problems on pc's in the past....soon as i take norton off the problem is sorted so now i just look for norton and remove it first.
AVG said they were stopping the free service so i went over to AVAST....just as good, free and free updates.
zone alarm is also free and free updates, you will find both a lot more pc friendly than norton (i prefer to call it 'not on')

Norton anti-virus is poison. Remove it now. Avoid it like the plague at all costs. Trust me! It just messes up your computer and causes both short term and long term problems.

turn off the genuine-time (resident) risk-free practices in spy ware Terminator. It consumes a number of computing gadget aspects. additionally turn off the anti-virus risk-free practices in ST, in case you have it on. that's redundant for the reason which you have CA. purely use ST as a on-call for scanner to test with on a prevalent foundation. CCleaner consumes no aspects except you have this technique open and are certainly "cleansing" with it. Norton runs genuine "heavy" and could in all risk sluggish you gadget down much extra. The CA, ST, CC mixture would desire to guard you nicely.
