Besides staying in the tire better because the molecules are larger, it also has less of a tendency to expand and contract because of changes in temperature. Your tire pressure stays more constant under different driving conditions.

If you inflate them with helium you will get better gas mileage. Since it will make your car weigh less because it provides lift.

Really though its just because the air molecules are larger and are less likely to leak out of your tire.

Whilst nitrogen (N2) is not a noble(Inert) gas it is very unreactive owing to the fact that the molecule (N2) di-nitrogen has three covalent bonds which need to be broken to make it react.

Essentially because it leaks less than composite air molecules and regulates pressure better over longer periods of time. As far as being cheaper, it's essentially the cheapest air substitue, as there isn't much that is cheaper than just pumping air into your tire.

It is inert, non flammable and provides lift and less CO2. It is also extremely cheap! (It can be took from the air)
