Start picking them up, holding them for a while, and then putting them down without squishing them.

Once you realize that the vast, vast majority of insect species are completely harmless, you'll start fearing them a lot less.

Believe it or not, it also actually helps if you are in fact injured by insects once in a while. People tend to imagine that things like bee and wasp stings are a lot worse than they are.

Unless you're allergic, a single bee or wasp sting is a minor annoyance at worst. I get stung a few times a year, and yeah, it burns for a while, but it hurts way worse when I stub my toe on the coffee table (which happens a few times a week), or even walk through a field of wet thistle. Yet they'd lock me up if I reacted to coffee tables the way some people react when they see a bee.

Good luck! I'd recommend starting with some of the cute bugs, like soft caterpillars or jumping spiders first.
