Elvis didn't do anything that wasn't being done already, he was just the white guy doing it. Check out footage of Little Richard. Elvis just brought it to the average white neighborhoods. In the same respect Eminem has done with hip-hop, or the Beastie Boys before him. Elvis was a performer, a stage pressence. He paved the way for guys to put on a show and be respected as not great musicians but performers. You have to look at Elton John, Queen, James Brown, Kid Rock even. There aren't too many showmen any more. Not too many walls to break down.
As far as simply taking what they do and carrying the mantle: The Beatles; The Who; Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath; Iron Maiden; Parliment Funkadelic; Dream Theater; Tool; Pink Floyd; Genesis; Yes; Frank Zappa; Tom Petty; Jimi Hendrix; Wu-Tang Clan; Aphex Twin; Ministry; Marilyn Manson; Aerosmith...etc. I could list the important bands but you get the point. There are the legitimate legends (above) and you get your followers just happy to ride the coattails of whatever is hip in the music industry. (cough cough Limp Bizkit cough)

There's no really perfect answer to this question! There are so many bands and artists that changed music with the sound they created! You can't just delegate all credit to a few you can list!

Close your eyes, and listen to something you've never heard before! Every artist has been inspired by other artists before them, plus they have added their own creative thing to the mix! Everything is NEW in some sort of way, it's just that some contributed more to the change than others. Try to come up with something musically original! It's alot of fun!

Lots of singers and bands have had great influence on later groups' music. The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Led Zepplin come to mind. Also, in country music, Hank Williams Sr., Lefty Frizzel, Jim Reeves, and Bob Wills influenced a lot of artists. I'm sure I'm forgetting many, but those sure influenced the sound of hundreds.

I have to agree with some of the other answers Elvis did his thing but I was always taught that his whole being was stolen. Not to say other artist don't but some of the other artist named made greater contributions to music history

Disagree with me but for me and my generation Jay-Z took his genera to a higher level.

Jimi Hendrix!!! Elvis didn't do anything exceptional except to do what others were doing but he was white. Jimi was doing something no other white or black man had ever done.
