Some don't agree, which may be the case. There are other worthy candidates.

However, most would agree Metallica is the most influential. Why is that?

are they the greatest? not in my book. Sabbath deserves that title outright. they created and molded metal. there are a ton more instrumentally talented bands and a ton more stage present groups. metallica is good at both but id much rather watch kiss, aerosmith, or gwar live.

Black Sabbath is the greatest Metal Band in history. They invented metal. Metallica is OK but not the best. Other newer metal bands play fast and repetitive. Anybody can do that. Listen to Sabbath with Ozzy you will see what I mean. There are a lot of great songs you never hear on the radio, so look into some Cd's. Sabbath after Ozzy left was not really Sabbath.

One very important thing is that they have composition. They actually have musical value in their songs, not just some random trashing like half the other bands out there. You know master of puppets? that song is amazing! it goes from a heavy and fast intro and verse/chorus, into a slow and soft interlude into a buildup... AND THE SOLO! they also have a unique ability of making softer songs seems metal-ish too.

Another thing they have is actual singing. Half the metal bands out there scream, and the other half can't sing. James can sing very well, and while playing guitar!

Last, emotion. they put so much emotion into their songs. you can even sense it in the solos. the entrance solo of fade to black almost makes me cry sometimes! Their lyrics are full of meaning, and also emotion.

All in all, you have to say it's no wonder Metallica is so great. it's easy to figure out why they have so many fans as well. let's hope the new album in the fall brings back the old school!

Sorry to say that Metallica is not the greatest metal band in history. While they had some awesome earlier albums, one word ruined it for them - NAPSTER, okay two words, LOAD. The whole napster ordeal made them look so bad - too corporate for my taste and such utter nonsense. LOAD sounds like an emo band made that album.

Greatest metal band in history is: BLACK SABBATH
