Talk to the cheerleaders at your school - they'll tell you exactly what they went through to get in. Every school's different in what they want their starters to be able to do.

Most do require some form of tumbling. A lot of squads participate in gymnastics. It helps to take some classes before try-outs. I was not a tumbler until my junior year. Dance and sharp motions is stressed at a lot of schools now. Also it helps to talk to the others and if you have some of the girls who you talk to on the squad alread get together with them and practice the cheers and some mild stunting. Remember to alway use a spot when building and learning how to tumble. Good luck.

Well to back flip, you must first learn to back hand spring. I'd try this out on a trampoline first until you've mastered it. But most importantly you must let go of the fear that you may get hurt while flipping. And last but not least you must have a little rhythm.

I think first you need to kiss a lot of butt. Give the captain of the squad whatever she wants. If you can't do that, don't even try out. If you can kiss a lot of butt, then go to a cheer camp in the summer. Two or three may be good.

I'd like to be quite frank with you;
if you've never done cheer and you're trying out before senior year, I don't think you'll make it.
People who've never done cheer make freshmen, and they are freshmen. People who have done cheer/or cheered for freshmen make JV. People who are the best make Varsity. Unless you do Intro classes, tumbling classes at least 2 times a week, your chances might be slim.
