I have a slipped disc and take the vicodin for the pain, neurontin for the nerve inflammation, skelaxin as a muscle relaxant, and ambien because I have trouble sleeping. I have already discussed this with my doctor and my pharmacist. The ambien, neurontin and vicodin are all supposed to make me sleepy, but it takes as much as 2-4 hours to take effect and sometimes I can't stay asleep when I finally do fall asleep. My family doctor is who prescribed my medication and he knows exactly what medication I am taking.

Your question is a really good one.

Separate your meds into two groups:
Those that have labels for "every day" or "x number times a day" and
those that have labels for "as needed."

Before you go to sleep, take only one of the
"as needed" meds.

Look-up each med to see how long it takes
for the med to "take affect," "peak," and the
"duration." Base your decision on what is
going on with your symptoms, which of the
"as needed" meds is most likely to help,
and which combination produces the least
stress about not waking-up.

By the way...
Ms. Smith's death was ruled accidental drug overdose,
because there isn't a category called, "stupid drug overdose."
Does anyone actually believe she did her medication homework?

What does your doc say about that combination?

Just remember, that most of the drugs, that "make you sleepy" in general suppress the brain stem. The brain stem helps control breathing. So, by mixing these drugs, you may fall alseep and never wake up. This is how overdoses happen. SO, as another poster stated,, only your doc can tell you how and when to take this combination safely. You should really consult with him/her.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of acetaminophen and hydrocodone can be fatal.
The first signs of an acetaminophen overdose include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, sweating, and confusion or weakness. Later symptoms may include pain in your upper stomach, dark urine, and yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes.
Overdose symptoms may also include extreme drowsiness, pinpoint pupils, cold and clammy skin, muscle weakness, fainting, weak pulse, slow heart rate, coma, blue lips, shallow breathing, or no breathing

Only your physician can decide if this is acceptable. Please check with him/her before you start this regiment..or if you already have still check if not prescribed by the same physician. If prescribed by the same doc. he/she should know how they will interact and whether it was/is safe to prescribe those meds. I wouldn't take any advice from "answers" on something like this. Not to offend anyone, but when it comes to meds as such and mixing them only the individuals phys. knows what's best.

you should ask if they can be taken at the same time! see if you can alter taking them throughout the day.

i want to advise that with some people ambien as been shown to make people sleep walk, and even drive in their sleep! so, please be careful. i would walk and even cooked in my sleep while on this, so needless to say, i'm off of ambien!

take care!!!

Sounds to this novice like you just need to add a few more drugs to your repertoire and then you will be ready to do an Ana Nicole!

Weren't all of Anna Nicole's numerous "medications" prescribed too?

Only take what you need when you need it. Hopefully the docs who prescribed these meds for you were aware of what you were already on.

Please make sure the doctor(s) who prescribed them are aware of what you're taking...everything you're taking, so that they can make an educated assessment of your needs.
