Are we really the land of the free? When the government says that females a certain age (in some cities) must get a shot that may prevent a certain type of cancer. This freaks me out. What's next? Why is it, that we're all created equal, but homosexuals can't express their love for one another legally? Why can't I use my hands free cell phone in some places while I am driving? Why am I not allowed to smoke in public?Serioulsy, what's next?

ok, in response to some of the posts. I have fought in Iraq. My brother died in Iraq, so I have every right to question if this is the land of the free.
What does it matter if I am gay/straight, smoke or don't? How is talking on the phone while driving, different that talking to a passenger in your car? Should we outlaw that? What about singing to the radio while driving?
I'm not saying I don't want a cure to cancer... Just don't force me to take something that may or may not work. It's my body, my life... You should be glad that someone, young or not, if fighting for his or her own right to think for themselves. This country is taking too much pride in thinking for us.

And the fool that said redefining marriage would then lead to having sex with animals... dude, you need serious help. Being gay doesn't mean you want to have sex with a goat. Or that you want to molest children... I feel for people with your ways of thinking. If you have fought for our country, that freaks me out too. Cause whatever mental tests you had to take, you passed... THAT IS SCARY!

you are right... I have heard that we are the land of the free, because of the brave. I think that is a noble sentiment; however, as Americans we are slowly losing more and more of our liberties. Take smoking for instance. In Texas they passed a $1.00 tax PER PACK last year. I don't smoke and don't like smoke but other people do and if they want to smoke, it is not my place to tell them they can't. I think drinking is a whole lot worse. You can smoke a pack of cigarettes and get behind the wheel and drive anywhere; however, you drink a bottle of rum and get behind the wheel you're going to have some SERIOUS problems. I also agree that no government should have the right to require a young girl to get a shot.
I feel like the legislature keeps pushing these laws on us to see how far they can go. The bad part is, we are laying back and taking it. We used to be a society who stood up for our rights and the things we believe in. I think that we're living in a generation of wusses who feel like if they did stand up to our government and big business, it wouldn't matter or make a shred of difference anyway.

From your question I would guess that you are very young in age and thinking. A lot of these laws are for your benefit even if you don't think so. I have known many people that have died due to cancer, my father was one of them, smoked to many cigarettes, died from smoke cancer at age 79, suffered for the last 10 years as his health went downhill. My mother never smoked or drank, died at age 94.
I saw an accident that was caused by a father reaching across to the glove compartment to get his young daughter a candy bar, while his attention was diverted he ran into a tree. No one was hurt except his feelings as he tried to explain what happened to the police, don't know how he explained it to his wife. You can't smoke in public because it annoyes others, I quit smoking 39 years ago after smoking for over 25 years, yes, the numbers are correct, I am 81 going on 82. I can smell smoke as far away as 25 feet outside if the wind is blowing in my direction. I feel that those who smoke should not be proud of it.

Driving while using a cell phone and smoking in public is a question of putting others in danger. Land of the free? Not the land of freethinkers - here in Texas the state constitution prohibits me from running for public office because I don't believe in a "Supreme Being". As an agnostic, I am discriminated against from the same corner of society that thinks they have a right to make the moral rules for gays and shove their "righteousness" down everyone's throats.

No. Freedom in the way you are expressing it is anarchy.
We have a Republican form of government which guarantees "Ordered Liberty."
All of that said, I think the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th and 14th Amendments protect the privilege of privacy and the right of parents to decide for their children whether to get an HPV shot.
Gays can express their love for one another legally, and the US Supreme Court has found that the government has no right to prevent homosexuals from engaging in consensual adult homosexual acts.
All of these things above are constitutionally protected, "Ordered Liberties".
Now the handsefree cell phone in some places while driving argument goes to the health, safety and welfare issue. Those are police powers.
Those will be upheld because there is no constitutional right to use a handsfree cell phone, only the right to engage in a conversation using a phone. The state and government has the right to regulate time, place and manner of speech if it deems it necessary to protect the safety of others.
In short -- they don't want you to be distracted while driving and kill yourself, someone else or both of you, or more.

Yes....you really are in the land of the free !!!!!!!! ...I,on the other hand,am in Iraq willing to take the bullet meant for you for being a lover of freedom ! Once you redefine marriage, there is no logical stopping point.Men with animals, adults with children...where do you stop ? the US man-boy love assn (a pedifile advocacy group) has filed suit in EVERY state which legalized homosexual marriage, demanding the same 'rights'.... and sex with animals is now legal in oregon.Come to the middle east for a few weeks and you will KISS the ground when you get back to America !

penal complex is penal complex, united statesa. is loose o.k., yet undergo in suggestions some human beings pass to far with that freedom, so as that they are going to be jailed greater. ideally, we are actually not the land of the loose, we are the international police, the flag that we revere in the native land is seen as an emblem of worry and tyranny to all who're no longer American. This land of the loose grew to become into outfitted on the backs of slaves. We acclaim our lifestyle is the applicable, and for this reason all else follows at the back of us. Freedom combatants are actually not Leaders. freedom combatants are continually the audio gadget, the advocates, the rebels. Freedom isn't attainable. no longer even in united statesa.. Dont be fooled. individuals are loose to do what they're going to, yet no one else can delight in an analogous freedom individuals delight in, and as long as this cultural and militant 'empire' exists, individuals will continually be tyrants hiding at the back of a flag they acclaim to be an emblem of freedom.

Slowly but surely we are entering the police state stage... the 1st 2nd, 4th, and 10th amendments are already gone.
Its only a matter of time till we, the people, are either crushed or rise up and TAKE BACK our beloved freedoms and our beloved nation. Soon, all religions but the environmental religion will be supressed, and then...in a Godless nation...

We are not a country of freedoms, and rights. We are living in a country run by hypocrites, who are all about themselves, and money. They care nothing for us, only that we do what were told, and never question authority, and never stand up for what we believe in and never, ever say we disagree. We are close to USSR, our government is controlling our lives, because we let them. I say all of us, should unite, and make changes happen.

I don't smoke and don't advocate it, but I agree we can't have a free country with all these laws designed to protect people from themselves. This "it's for your own good" crap doesn't cut it, but since so many people are dumb enough to fall for that reasoning, it's bound to get worse unless people wake up.

The government never misses an opportunity to tell us how free we are. Tell the millions of people in prison for taking drugs that only hurt themselves. "The land of the free" is just meaningless propaganda.
