I just had a one week old player shoot craps and this is the only thing I could possibly think could have caused it. What other things can mess them up?

an mp3 player is just like a tiny computer in the sense that it has a hard drive for memory. if it bounces a lot, this will cause harm to the hard drive. plus, if your jeans are tight, this puts extra force on the player and just might cause it to crash. once in a while, a player will freeze up for whatever reason. just reset it, remove the battery, whatever (different brands of players have different methods of shutting down). then repower. if you have further problems, send it back

I carry my nano in my pocket even while on the treadmill or elliptical with no problems.

One week old, could be a manufacturing defect or you dropped it, got it wet, etc.

I know I have my Nano go crazy sometimes and had to reset it more than once.
