The Democrats pork barreled the war bill for funding and to bring the troops home. Why, if they truely believed in thier cause, why wouldn't they just put the bill in straight up ? Is this the kind of action we can expect from them from now on ?

A lot of the answers are indicating that this is the way they do things and I agree with that assertion for both parties. That does not make it right, especially when this is the platform that they used to take power. Our exceptance of it and lack of outrage over it is why it happens all the time.

It's really no different than any other spending bill. It happens all the time, from both sides.

It sucks.

The short answer is that they pork barreled it to bring in those Democrats who were wavering. It wasn't easy to get every Democrat to agree to the provisions in this bill. There are varying opinions on how to handle the Iraq situation and I imagine it was a nightmare trying to reach a consensus. This is not an unusual practice - there was pork attached to the Patriot Act for instance. It doesn't have a whole lot to do with not believing in their cause, they all believe Iraq is a disaster. But just like the far left delegates who keep screaming impeachment, there are those who want the troops brought home NOW. Getting them to agree to this timeline was a tribute to the skills of Nancy Pelosi in my opinion. I really don't envy her job to tell you the truth, and she did what it took to move it forward.

People are never happy it seems. They were screaming that Congress wasn't doing what they were elected to do fast enough. Then when they take necessary measures to get a bill pushed through they still get bitched at. This type of pork barrel compromise is hardly a new tactic. But with all of the corruption scandals in Washington, everything is being picked apart with a fine tooth comb. I don't remember anyone even commenting on the pork attached to the Patriot Act, but it was there just the same.

It was a sneaky way of not getting funding for the troops.Instead of having the courage just to vote down on the bill, they attached the pork knowing the president would veto.Yeh,the left supports our troops alright. This proves it.Funny thing is we will still know who made up the bill and it will hurt the left in next election.Disagree with the war,but dont leave our soldiers and their families in need. How disgusting.

unlike most of the time, the "pork" was added this time get the democrates onboard. imagine democrates voting for war funding if they weren't getting something in return. this was done to ensure it would make it to the Presidents desk. now although he definitly wants the war funding, he doesn't want the added pork or the timeline for withdrawl. so he in return will veto the bill. it will be a press nighmare as headline will scream : Bush veto's war funding bill". i hate politics.

Call a poison pill the bill has nice sound to it but they throw in the pork so that people don't vote for it.

Haha yeah cause the Democrats are the only ones guilty of doing this.

The "pork" was put in to get some Democrats on board with the bill who previously opposed it.

Liberals are what one calls liars. They know they don't want to stop the war, it being necessary, but it was also necessary to fool their voters to win the House and Senate by a very small margin. If there is a slight chance a Liberal wins the White House in the next election, just watch. You will see their true intentions were never to stop any war, but to get elected, and draft we Americans who can't, or won't join the military. Liberals want unwilling, or unable Americans to fight for them. They can't do it themselves! OMG!

They filled it with pork because evidently you can't bribe voters with just bottle caps.

Same reason it happens to every damn bill; would you people grow up and do some research? IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. Republicans do it too. Where are your outraged objections when THEY do it?
