The philosophy, as I understand it, amounts to this:
If you sacrifice yourself for a righteous cause, then you get to go to a heavenly place.
Since scratching around in the sand is not very wonderful, the heavenly reward sounds pretty good by comparison. You get all pumped up with the idea of going to a better place and it's not like dying is going to take very long, so you raise your hand to go on the mission. One BOOM! and it's over before you know what hit you.
It's not like they will bury you in the sand and let the bugs nibble you to death in a long, extended, painful departure.
