I was told that I, Robot was a book first, is that true and if so is the book the same name?

Yes it was originally part of an anthology of short stories about robots and later expanded by the author Isaac Asimov to a story somewhat resembling the film

I Robot is a book by Issac Asimov. It is a collection of short stories, however the modern film bears little resemblance to the book or any part of it.
