right to male-only events, facilities, etc.?
This is a serious question. If you answer, please answer from the point of view of fairness, justice, general principles etc. I'm not interested in answers where someone states that being around men makes them feel creeped out, etc. I'm asking is this fair, and if so, why?

The first thing that comes to mind are gyms. These are obviously private clubs to some degree, but I'm not aware of any male equivalents to, say, curves. Also, there's the women only hours or rooms that many coed gyms are starting to have.
Also, most book clubs are all-female, and these aren't just the Oprah-influenced ones, but ones that read books that might be of interest to any gender.
Then there is adventure travel, running races, and so on.
I also want to be clear that I'm not just speaking from a legal point of view. A male-only gym or book club would probably be regarded with opprobrium by many, while the female equivalent is not.

Krazy Libra, I don't think anyone's suggesting same sex restrooms or hockey teams.... If I recall, that's the boogeyman that sunk the ERA back in the early 80s.

I think that all people, reguardless of sex, religion, color creed, or sexual preferance should have the same rights as everyone else. I personaly would not be upset if there was a gym set up geared towards men only. I agree that men and women should be able to work out in the same gym with no problems and that is why there are places where people can do this. As a woman who does go to the gym I must say that although there are good men there, there are plenty who prefer to look at a womans breasts or back end while they are working out instead of paying attention to their own routine. This is why I feel that a womans only gym is important. As far as book clubs go, I havent run across too many that are not co-ed and the ones that are for women are geared towards womans rights or women authors but are open to having mens oppinion at hand and willing to accept their attendance. I can say things to you like "how do you feel when we come with you and your friends hunting, fishing, golfing etc. however, you could turn around and say the same about us going to the salon or to have our nails done so it would not be a valid point. Men and women think and act differently, but we need eachother. I feel it is important for both men and women to have a place where they can go and vent their stress to people of the same sex without interuption from the opposite sex. Men have lodges in most areas that are closed to women. Also men have fire departments that do not allow women to be in their lounges on certain days. I had been a volenteer fire fighter for a few years and fought to get the "law" removed that women were not able to be in the fire house on a Sunday. When it was refused, I quit the fire department because I felt that Sundays should be a day for firefighters only, not just men. It does seem though that in alot of situations because women have fought for so many rights they we are pushing the men out of our lives. I do not believe that there is really too big of a discrepancy between the number of women only and men only clubs/facilities as one may think. I believe that you have brought up a valid point, however I do feel that women should have a place to go on their own as should men.

Have you looked at the Health section and womens health.
they have a narrow view of their health ( the period dominates the issue)
what guy has patience to hear the same story 1k times.
The only all female events I can think of is Curves, Red Hat,
and some sororities.
I believe there are many all male clubs and events
Too many times I have checked the bars to find NO women just guys yelling at the TV.
Fair what is that?

Hmmm...in general I'd say no. If men are not allowed women should not be allowed.
If there is public funding of the event or for education...then no...it should be open to all.
If men or women are having a private function that they want only their gender to attend...then I think they can do that.
In the gym where I belong...they have a "women's gym" room that has some equipment, mostly because there are a lot of women who feel funny working out in front of men. In our society women are judged on their bodies and looks...men are not. So, there is a difference when we are out in public. Men and women are treated differently, judged differently, and expectations are different. So, this in itself can create a necessity for gender specific events or facilities.
A gender specific event can allow people to be themselves. Often we act different in front of the opposite sex.
But...in general my personal feeling is that it's not necessary.

In our local "working man's club" they have a men only room. I can't get my head around this, there are no women allowed in that room in the club. I couldn't imagine there being a "ladies only room - no men allowed"... I find it insulting, though I know it's because it's old fashioned and it was once common place. My Dad thought it was amusing that I didn't like it, my 8 year old son was baffled by it (thank goodness). I have no problem with sports being split by sex (as long as the prize money is the same for both).

In some cases yes. Like sports wise for example, it's much safer to have men play men and women play women for one the sports are very physical and usually the men out weigh the women. Like Hockey or Football. Basket Ball, the women can't hold that big orange and black ball like the men can, and so they have a smaller ball.
Men have Fraternities, Women have Sororities.
There are professional men and women dancers/strippers(mainly women get more popularity with sexual exploitation).
Or like beauty pageants, you're judging women. Just like they have those muscle pageants or whatever you call it for men, judging their physique.
Also facilities I'm guessing rest rooms, well of course, we are in public, and women may want to change, or have to manage their period or something, where men shouldn't be exposed to, just as women shouldn't be exposed to men pulling out their you know what and peeing in a toilet.
Men usually have many men only activities or cover most of the equal opportunity like Politics, Military.
There is a coin toss in all this.
lol, I can't think of anything else right now.

There are just as many events for men as woman. There is a chance that you have only been paying attention to the woman's events though because people see what they want to see.
But there is no reason to have just a man or woman's event. Some may feel that there is a difference but I think it depends on how you were brought up.
I was always around the guys and I am not nearly as comfortable around woman as men.

The 1st Amendment gives all Americans the right to peacefully assemble. There are both men's clubs and women's clubs which allow both men and women to interact in ways which they feel comfortable with their own gender. If there were an organization open to all they have to obey the Constitution. The First Amendment would also give men and women the right to have same gender gatherings. If you feel you are being discriminated because of your gender.then you would have to have to go through litigation. There are many mens groups which you could join.Men have the same rights as women.

No, I don't think it's fair at all, if you're discussing social events. To look at things from a very simple perspective, women have Girls' Nights Out all the time, and men should have their Boys' Nights Out as well. Fair's fair, right?

Its is after all a free country. Maybe men lack the motivation or desire to have a men only event and whenever they do such as a club theres always some woman trying to butt in.

What female only events/facilities are you talking about? If they are public, they must allow everyone. Private clubs, etc., have a little more leeway.
