Only some self-righteous snob would think that. A community college is an excellent way to get your core courses out of the way before you transfer to a 4 year college or university. The fact that it costs less to go to it, I see as a plus. You are spending less, your college debt will probably be far less when you start working, and companies don't consider it to be less of an education. I think a community college is a smart choice.

I don't agree with the characterization but here are some possible reasons:
It does cost less.
The level of education is not equal between poorer schools and well off schools and it is typically easier to get into a Community College.
Wealthy families often will still just pay for a four year college to be able to say jounior went...
Families with less money have to make more prudent decisions.
Now while I have said this, these are just some reasons why someone might thing this. There are a number of reasons for going to a community college. I know because I did. And I did fine. Advancement was slower but over all with hard work you can still do well.

Two big reasons:
1. It's cheaper.
The Maricopa Community College District charges $65 per credit hour. Arizona State University charges $220+ a credit hour, often for the SAME class.
2. There are three uses for community colleges:
1. Prepare for transfer to University.
2. Get an academic Associate's degree (usually to accomplish #1).
3. Get an Associate's in Applied Science.
The last option, getting an AAS, is primarily oriented at those who can not afford, lack the aptitude for, or are simply unwilling to get a Bachelor's degree. As such, it's often used to gain or upgrade entry level or technical skills for employment--an area "poor people" are more likely to be interested in.
These two factors are the most lilely reasons it would be considered "poor person's college".
The irony is, of course, that if you're smart and frugal you'll seek out colleges with articulation agreements, like the Maricopa County Community College District and all the state sponsored universities in Arizona who have specialized agreements that guarantee your admittance to the 4-year institutions and transfer of credits as if they were native to the 4-year institution when you select appropriate classes. Additionally, you can also dual-enroll and take your Junior and Senior level classes at the 4-year institution while finishin off the lower division classes for seriously less money at the community college!

Hi,
A lot of middle class and rich people attend community colleges too. In fact if you're not sure what you want to yet it's the best way to start. People who don't know any better might say that community colleges are for poor people because they generally cost less than private schools. But that's like saying only poor people shop at Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store because the prices are cheaper, when in fact people from all classes shop there because no one wants to pay a lot of money for anything.

I never knew anyone that thought that. A lot of my classmates chose to go to a community college to get their general classes. Face it, it's cheaper. I plan on going back to a community college in a few years to become a registered nurse. I also have two kids. I can't afford spending 30,000 a year when I can pay 3,000. I think it's pointless.

Because people are ignorant. In fact, you have to have a good amount of money to go to a community college. They take payments upfront for their courses. Parents are usually the ones who pay for college unless the child gets a scholorship. Most people who attend community college are paying for it themselves. Thank you.

Because it is cheaper, and often has a less intelligent student body.
However, since a community college is smaller you actually learn more and have a more positive experience. Plus, if you are intelligent you will get very good grades there.
