I am 22 weeks pregnant, I had an ultra-sound at 18wks but they could not get a picture of the spine so the doctor schuduled me for a level 2 ultra-sound. Ive been doing some reading, does this mean something is possibly wrong with the baby? The doctor hasnt said anything to me about anything being wrong with the baby but im worried because the reading ive been doing on a level 2 ultra-sound means that there is some problem witht the fetus. Is this true? Thank you sooo much.

Level two ultrasounds are done between 18 and 22 weeks to check the anatomy of the baby. It's called this because it's more accurate and the technician can see more of the anatomy than with the ultrasound machines at the doctor's office (think of it like one step better). I just had one yesterday and they checked the heart, brain, kidneys, spine, and were able to see 10 fingers, 10 toes, and that it was a boy. Sometimes they're curled up and it's a little difficult for the technician to see specific parts. I had to turn on my sides to get the baby to turn because they couldn't see the kidneys that well. The one you had at 18 weeks was most likely a level two ultrasound as well, but there's nothing to worry about.

Having a level 2 ultrasound does not mean there is anything wrong....they just want to make sure nothing is wrong. If they could not get a picture of the spine that is why they are sending you. In a level 2 ultrasound that is all they will be concentrating on a specific thing....in this case the spine.
