I've heard that some air freshener sprays and plug ins that claim to eliminate odors actually use anesthetics to dull ability to smell rather than eliminate odors. I don't use sprays - they just don't seem to work. I'll stick with products that actually absorb and eliminate odors. Anyone else know anything about this?

Yes you are correct!!

Air fresheners are consumer products that mitigate unpleasant odors in indoor spaces. They work in one of five ways:

Absorption: Adsorbents like activated charcoal or silica gel may be used to absorb offending, chemical odors.
Chemical neutralization: Substances such as rubber may be used for some odors.
Disinfection. Odors caused by bacterial activity can be eliminated by disinfectants like ozone, TEG or bleaching agents containing hydrogen peroxide, chlorine or hypochlorites.
Masking: Many "fresheners" obscure odors with a fragrance.
Anesthetization: Some air fresheners use anesthetics to dull the sense of smell.

Yes, I've heard this too. Also, read the labels on some of these sprays, gels and plug ins. Lots of caution and warning statements.

Why not just open the door and window and let in fresh air, its the best answer for getting rid of smells.
