I'm looking for an apartment for the summer. Any advice on search strategies (where to and how to look for and all that), and how to get the best deals?
thank you

1) Stay off the internet unless you just want to FIND apartments in the area. The internet is a great place to be misled. Just because they HAVE those apartments doesn't mean they are available.
2) Talk to people in the apartment--do they like it? What do they not like? Is the management nice to work with?
3) Also, look into your budget--be real. If you can't afford that nice, new $1200/month apartment, don't get it. Save yourself the money and find somewhere that fits YOUR budget. Remember to include other bills too.
4) Look into odd rules or the lack thereof. Our apartment allows smoking in the apartment, so if you're allergic, don't go there. Also look at your lease--the cheapest will be for a 12+month contract. Are you going to stay there for 12+months?
5) When it comes to looking at apartments, look at how they keep up the outside appearance. If they can't even keep up the yard, how will they keep up with your problems?
6) The best deals will come if you ask. Say, "is this is the best price for this apartment?" Some will just say yes and some may bargain with you.
7) ALWAYS look at more than one apartment. Take pictures. Take notes. Compare, compare, compare!
8) Check the classifieds in your paper for REAL offers. Most will tell you what they have to offer. If not that, sometimes they can introduce you to an area you want to live in and can be placed on a waiting list.
9) When it comes to upstairs/downstairs--ask yourself if you can see yourself carrying groceries up the stairs. While it's great to be on an upper level, it's also going to be the warmest and most costly to cool in the summer since warm air rises.

Craigslist.com often has places listed. I would also try apartment search services in your area, like Apartment People or Apartment Finders. You can also just walk around the area you want to move and check for signs. Finding something for just the summer can be tricky, though so ask about short-term leases when you call.
When you are looking, be sure to check the water pressure, ask about who lives above/below you, and pay attention to what else is in the area (fire station, bars, schools, etc)

If you live in a big enough city to have it's own craigslist, I'd recommend searching there. Thats how I found mine.

If you're around college age look there. There's always stuff on bulletin boards. Try craigslist.com in your area.
