What are other careers a person interested in teaching should consider. I love young kids, and who doesn't like the idea of summers off.

If you are interested in helping children, besides teaching in a school system, you could work in daycare. You could go into social work, working with at-risk children in certain high poverty/high crime areas.

Be a mentor! Many organizations actively recruit adults who want to be a big brother/big sister to a needing child.

Other ideas are becoming a director of an area youth facility, like a YMCA, or working at a children's theater.

Good luck - working with children is extremely REWARDING!

Daycare, social workers (although that's not the pleasant part of working with kids sometimes), school counselor, before/after school programs.

But if you think that teaching means summers off...think again. MAYBE about 2 weeks off. Teachers typically spend their summers in seminars, professional development activities, and preparing for the next school year. Some teachers have to take summer jobs because their pay is so sub-par....teachers teach in summer school or tutor. Not to mention the 40-60 hours a week you'll put in during the school year.

If you are doing it because of your love for children...then go for it...but summers are just as busy.
