Swimming allows a person to get into a quiet rythm that is not affected by outside forces. This helps calm the nerves. It also allows the swimmer to become lost in thought and possible come to resolutions to current problems without interruption.

However, swimming can also be detrimental to mental health because it is a very solitary activity.

It is not so much the swimming as it is the fitness.

Fitness increases your bodies capacity to circulate oxegen effectively. That oxegen diminishes fatige (tiredness). Diminished fatigue improves concentration. Improved concentration increases your capacity to solve complex mental problems.

Swimming is therefore good for a person mentally. (As exemplified by the above expression of simple logic)

I would have said that fitness reduces stress, but my swimming coach certainly doesn't do that for me. When I get out of the pool everything hurts... everything has been stressed.

swimming helps mentally because if you do it for a reason, after you're finished you'll feel good that you accomplished something and gained strength. If you are a swimmer and are a racer, you will feel good because you just got stronger and are getting faster. you feel good because you accomplished something and are closer to your goal.

Personally, I think its its the best therapy. When you swim, you cannot talk to anyone. You are forced to think everything out. I solve all of my problems in the pool. If I am angry at something, I swim harder and longer. Its amazing therapy for me.
