My husbands time in the army recently ended and he is currently looking for a job. In the meantime, he has filed for unemployment.

I'm trying to do some budgeting and have a question. The dollar amount that they tell you that you are going to get per week... is that the actual amount or do they take taxes out of that amount?

Thanks

Lol, ALL coffee. Right now I'm drinking a double tall nonfat toffee nut latte.

The taxes deducted is voluntary. A form should of had arrived with the paper worked that asked if you wanted taxes to be withheld. The dollar amount they give you is usually the current amount, as long as there is no other corrections to be made on the income quarters on file. It is a weekly amount but is paid bi-weekly and on the first call in you only get a one week check and the 2nd is held until you have received 3 times the weekly benefit amount. The checks are usually mailed out within 2 days after the call in is made every two weeks.

Same thing happened to my husband! He got out of the army and collected unemployment. As far as I recall, they do not take taxes out of unemployment benefits. But at the end of the year, you have to file the income on your taxes. And the IRS considers it taxable income

You can set that up either way. If you have nothing taken now, you'll have more cash upfront but will owe taxes when you file next year. Go with that, you may need all of it for right now.
